最近好多人提起"窮得只剩下錢"。最先聽到這句咁不合邏輯的當然係有人看過這本書，之後不同人不同場合都有人不約而同提起。

如果用英文應該怎樣譯" 窮得只剩下錢"呢?

"Put your best foot forward" means to do something as well as you can

e.g. Make sure you put your best foot forward for tonight's performance.

"Cry Wolf" is to call others for help when you do not really need help.

e.g. I'll be in the other room, so call me if you need me. But no crying wolf.

為“七田真教學”經營權‧姐弟對簿公堂

今日看到以下一段新聞．．．‧

新加坡‧為“七田真教學”經營權‧姐弟對簿公堂

（新加坡）自日本引進的“七田真全腦開發教學”在新加坡的特許經營權持有者，起訴五個前職員包括老闆的弟弟串謀搶生意、盜用商業機密和有意搶奪特許經營權。

新加坡教育公司七田式兒童潛力開發中心（The Shichida Method（S），簡稱七田式）持有日本七田教育研究所在新加坡和馬來西亞的特許經營權。七田式專為3個月至12歲兒童提供由日本已故七田真博士（Shichida Makoto）研發的“全腦開發教學”課程。

七田式在新加坡2個地點開辦這類課程，學生有3000人，前年的收入高達720萬元。

outrageous的正確讀音

今日好多報紙都報導電盈私有化，而且好似是和大家上一堂英語課一樣。例如bottom price解底價、nothing wrong指並無不妥、expropriation解沒收、squeeze out意思為迫走、outrageous解令人憤怒、pathetic 可悲等。

今早聽商台，其中有女DJ說outrageous的正確讀意是out．trei．geous，而不應讀成out．rei．geous。我對這個有點懷疑，於是查字典，聽字典的讀音好像有點不同，不知大家有何意見？

有網友問我學習近況，大至如下：

睇戲基本上唔使看字幕都聽到7、8成(最近看Macadamia Escape 2 Africa同The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)，但一定要好專心。但一有言幕就好依賴字幕。
試過同外國人交談時自己覺得無咁緊張，但這樣的機會唔多，所以要多找機會測試下自己。
這個七田真方法我覺得對我自己幾Work，雖然不是真的能在３個月便突飛猛進，但看到自己漸漸進步一樣好開心。

我會繼續努力，現正朝新目標進發，遲下同大家分享。

My fellow citizens:

      I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

      Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

      So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

      That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

      These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

      Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.

      On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

Plough into

昨日看到的一段新聞:

Fighter jet crash kills three on the ground.
Pilot ejected before plane ploughed into homes in suburban San Diego.

Plough在Sina字典解:

v.i. 用犁耕田,開路
v.t. 耕,犁,開路

而Longman的解釋如下:

plough into sb/sth vt - to hit something hard, especially while driving, because you are going too fast or not paying attention.

e.g. I ploughed into the car in front.

這個詞用來形容這次意外真的好圖像化，飛機有如用犁耕田一樣插入地上的家園。而英文的解釋就帶點機師是不小心的意味。

man Friday=星期五的男人?

Man Friday兩個字好似好簡單，單獨每個字的意思都一定知道，但合起來又是什麼意思呢？

原來這個詞源於《魯濱遜漂流記》小說，意思是“得力助手”。記得小時候有一天，家姐由學校帶來這本小說，年小的我當時已被書面上的圖像吸引了，當時年記小，雖然似懂非懂地看，但已被小說的情節吸引著追看下去。

此詞不是“混亂”的意思，字典中gross是“總的，毛重的”的意思，實際上此詞是表示“噁心”的意思與gag相近，是美國年輕人一天到晚掛在嘴邊的詞。例子：Yuck， what is this stuff? It looks gross. (哎呀，這是什麽東西？真噁心)

1.dude(老兄，老哥)
～解釋～
dude n.花花公子, 紈絝子弟
很多人以爲這個字解作“花花公子，紈絝子弟”，實際上此詞是叫男性年輕人的常用詞，與guy的意思相同，只是guy用的範圍更廣。例子：Hey dude look at that girl.(喂，老兄，看那個女孩)

2.chick(女孩)
～解釋～
chick n.
A young chicken.小雞
Slang :A girl or young woman.【俚語】少女或少婦
此字容易被誤解爲“雞，妓女”，實際上此詞是叫女孩的常用詞，語氣中確實有輕佻、不尊重的傾向，但不是罵人。例子：Look at that chick at the door.(看門口的那個女孩)


3.pissed off(生氣，不高興)

vi.vt.小便、撒尿弄濕
n.小便
千萬別認爲是“尿尿”的意思，piss off在字典中則是“滾開，滾蛋”的意思，實際上此詞是表示“生氣，不高興”的意思，與angry同意。例子：Man，is that guy pissed off ？(哎呀，那傢夥真的生氣了)

一個金融海潚另全球震動，另很多人損失不少。而我這個經濟文盲反而在藉著這次機會學多好多經濟知識和英文。

Trade Surplus即貿易順差又名“出超”或“貿易盈餘”是貿易逆差的相反，指的是一個國家或地區，在一定時期內（通常為一年）向國外出口商品的總值超過從國外進口商品的總值。

Trade Deficit即貿易逆差又名“入超”，是貿易順差的相反。指的是一個國家或地區，在一定時期內（通常為一年）從國外進口商品總值超過向國外出口商品總值的差額。

錄下自己的發音，再重聽看有沒有發意不正確
多認識幾個外籍人士（要係Native speakers），常常和他們交談
多聽多講
多聽英文歌、BBC新聞、英語presentations等
多留意Native Speakers的語調、節奏和發音
學識發音符號，遇到不認識的字，要查字典學會正確發音
不要怕羞，多和外籍人士交談
學懂俚語／口語
最後都係那句”Practice make perfect!”

今日上網遇到一個生字"Non-event"，英文有時就係咁，表面好似好簡單，正好此字Non-這個字首意思係negative或not，而event此字都好簡單，但合起來何解呢？

查字典才知解作－大事宣傳而結果並未舉辦的事，an evnet htat is disappointing because it is much less interesting and exciting than you expected。

例句：The conference was a bit of a non-event - hardly anyone turned up for it.
